Take a closer look at some of the elements found in good email subject lines.
Concise & Relevant
You have a limited number of characters to convey your subject line. Many email marketers recommend sticking to 50 characters or less, which isn’t a lot – choose your words carefully and make them count. Create a subject line that sets an expectation of what’s to come, then make sure to deliver in the email itself.
Create a Sense of Urgency
Creating a sense of urgency can often help to get your customer’s attention. Don’t be afraid to mention that there are “Only 7 Days Left…”, “Beat the Holiday Rush…”, “Plan Your Thanksgiving with….” are all good examples of subject lines that motivate users to respond.
GUARANTEED FREE VACATION GIVEAWAY!!!
As we learned last week it pays to chose your words wisely. ‘Catchy’ or ‘Spammy’ words can get you into trouble. Don’t be afraid to advertise your offer, just do so tactfully. Over-use of spammy words will greatly increase the chances of your email going straight into the junk folder.
Never Stop Testing
With every email you send you have an opportunity to try something new, but make sure to measure the results. This will allow you to refine future messages based on what works best for your target audience.
Is some of this starting to sound familiar? The truth is that these common themes play into a variety of aspects of your marketing campaign. They apply not only to the subject line, but email copy, the call to action or your offer and even the web site landing page itself!
